How to play B♭ on the recorder
The fingering for B♭ on a soprano (descant) recorder, with baroque fingering: Left thumb behind, the left pointer finger on hole 1, hole 2 open, the left ring finger on hole 3, and the right pointer finger on hole 4.
B♭
Thumb hole covered, holes 1 3 4 covered
How to play it
- B flat (B♭) is a forked fingering: hole 2 stays open between covered holes.
- It's the same on baroque and German recorders. From A, lift your middle finger and put your right pointer finger on hole 4.
Why it squeaks or sounds wrong
- If you hear B, holes 3 and 4 aren't fully covered.
- If it sounds much lower, your middle finger is still on hole 2: lift it.
Free, in your browser: it listens as you play and shows which finger to fix.
