How to play high A on the recorder
The fingering for high A on a soprano (descant) recorder, with baroque fingering: Thumb pinched (half open), and the left pointer and middle fingers on holes 1 and 2: A's fingering, with the thumb pinched.
high A
Thumb hole half covered (pinched), holes 1 2 covered
How to play it
- High A is A an octave up: from high G, lift your left ring finger (hole 3) and keep the thumb pinched.
- It's the same on baroque and German recorders. Blow a little more firmly, but keep the air steady.
Why it squeaks or sounds wrong
- If you hear the lower A, the thumb is covering the whole hole: open a small gap at the top.
- If it squeaks or won't sound, the gap is too big or the air too strong: roll the thumb back a little and blow steadily.
Free, in your browser: it listens as you play and shows which finger to fix.
