How to play F on the recorder
The fingering for F on a soprano (descant) recorder, with baroque fingering: Baroque: left thumb and holes 1, 2 and 3, the right pointer finger on hole 4, hole 5 open, and the right ring and little fingers on holes 6 and 7. German: the thumb and holes 1 to 4 only.
This note is fingered differently on German-fingering recorders: choose your recorder's fingering to see it.
Thumb hole covered, holes 1 2 3 4 6 7 covered Thumb hole covered, holes 1 2 3 4 covered
How to play it
- On a baroque recorder F is a "forked" fingering: an open hole (5) between covered ones.
- On a German recorder F is simple: from G, just add your right pointer finger on hole 4. Set the chart to your recorder's fingering.
Why it squeaks or sounds wrong
- The German fingering on a baroque recorder gives an F that's too high (and the other way round): check which system your recorder uses.
- If it squeaks, check holes 6 and 7: the little finger has to seal its hole fully.
Free, in your browser: it listens as you play and shows which finger to fix.
